The University Grants Commission (UGC) has updated its rules on degree programs. When it comes to the reshaping, UGC Chairman Mr. M. Jagadesh Kumar has made a major announcement that has the potential to transform the country’s higher education structure.
UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar said on Tuesday that with the University Grants Commission (UGC) approving a proposal, students will be permitted to study two-degree courses in physical mode at the same time, in the same or separate streams.
At its most recent meeting, the UGC granted simultaneous dual degrees to Indian students, allowing them to take courses at the same or different universities at the same time. In this context, the commission will provide specific instructions soon.
As announced in the new National Education Policy (NEP) and in order to allow students to acquire multiple skills, UGC is coming up with new guidelines to allow a candidate to pursue two-degree programs in physical mode simultaneously. The degrees can either be pursued at the same or different universities, Mr. Kumar said at a press conference.

Such changes being proposed by UGC are likely to be in conflict with the National Education Policy, NEP 2020. Even when NEP was introduced, the idea was to have a world-class education system in the country.
Lately, news appeared of four yearlong degree programmes soon to be implemented in the country. While these programmes are expected to boost the benefits of a bachelor’s degree, how they will fall in line with this new change of simultaneous degrees is yet to be clarified.
