The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released draft recommendations to ensure that women students in HEIs have access to the necessities for a safe and secure environment.
The draught “Guidelines for Basic Facilities and Amenities for a Safe, Secure Environment for Women and Women’s Cells” has been circulated to all interested parties for comments and suggestions by the higher education regulator (for sensitization, policy implementation, monitoring, and grievance redressal).
The University Grants Commission (UGC) previously requested that colleges and universities implement the Cyber Security course syllabus at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Initial Guidelines
- On-campus professional counseling services should be accessible to help students with their psychological and emotional issues.
- Women’s engagement in higher education would increase if college/university administration improved the facilities and safety on their campuses.
- Colleges and colleges should make sure that women have easy access to basic sanitation and hygiene facilities, such as clean, well-kept separate toilets with a 24-hour water supply, soap, covered trash bins, and vending machines.
- There should be no dark stretches anywhere on the campus. The campus and the adjoining areas should be well-lit. Sports and other playgrounds and public parks should have floodlights.
- A sufficient number of female security guards should be hired by credible security firms.
- The administration should organize self-defense classes or training camps for female students and employees on a regular basis.
