The University Grants Commission (UGC), the organisation that oversees higher education, recently proposed a new category of college instructors called Professors of Practice.
According to a top commission official, over 4,300 professionals and business leaders have sought to become Professors of Practice, and at least 140 colleges and universities are interested in bringing these experts on board.

The University Grants Commission introduced the registration website pop.ugc.ac.in for Professor of Practise on May 16 in an effort to close the knowledge gap between academia and industry by making it easier for businesses to hire qualified experts in a variety of subjects.
As many as 4,388 experts or professionals and 140 universities, colleges, and institutes have registered on the portal till July 2. Those registering for academic positions include experts in the fields of engineering, science, technology, entrepreneurship, commerce, social sciences, media, and literature.
