On Monday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) directed that all universities and colleges appoint compliance officers.
According to the most recent UGC notice, there has been a significant increase in the number of foreign students traveling to India to study. However, the absence of a designated person to be reached by Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRROs) / Foreigners Registration Offices (FROs) in educational establishments causes delays in a number of areas.
Similarly, increased harassment of international students is caused by delays in processing service applications and unintended violations of visa regulations by foreigners. Taking all of this into account, the UGC has suggested that all higher educational institutions hire compliance officers.
The compliance officers will work with FRROs and FROs to ascertain facts about foreign students during the provision of various services such as visa registration, visa extension, exit permits, and so on, as well as their attendance, academic performance, and other academic records.
The UGC has requested vice-chancellors of universities and presidents of colleges to spread the information among colleges and affiliated institutions in its notice.
In other news, the UGC has requested comments/suggestions on the draught University Grants Commission (Conference of Autonomous Status Upon Colleges and Measures for Maintaining Standards in Autonomous Colleges) Regulations, 2022.
“The higher education in the country is going through a major transformation with the advent of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. “UGC has reviewed the existing regulations to align them with the recommendations of NEP, 2020 with the help of an Expert Committee,” the UGC notice read.
