In cooperation with the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, a group of experts working under the Union Ministry of Education, UGC is planning to appoint a committee to develop the plan for the translation of textbooks.
In all regions of the nation, the University Grants Commission (UGC) intends to launch undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in regional languages. This is part of the Union government’s initiative, which follows the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, to include regional languages as a medium of instruction in both schools and colleges.
According to reports, the UGC will appoint a committee to develop a plan for textbook translation in collaboration with the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, a group of experts working under the Union Ministry of Education to promote Indian languages.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) chair, M. Jagadesh Kumar, spoke about the use of regional languages in colleges and universities and disclosed that the proposed committee would begin by getting in touch with the authors and publishers of widely used textbooks for the translation process.
Universities would not be able to start offering courses in regional languages without the proper study materials and textbooks across disciplines, he continued. Textbooks are essential components for the effective use of regional language education.
Kumar said, “The first order of business for the committee is to identify which books of global authors have been used in our colleges and universities for decades and reach out to the well-known publishers and authors to express our intent of translating them into several Indian languages.”
The authors who were contacted responded favorably, and the UGC-appointed committee will now contact Indian authors to inquire about the possibility of having their books translated into local dialects.
