“India will move where the youth go”, says PM Modi as he lays foundation for Major Dhyan Chand Sports University.

Our youth today have the heritage of antiquity and have a sense of modernity, and so, where the youth will go, India will also move and the world is going to go where India goes”, said PM Modi post laying the foundation stone of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University, Meerut.
As per an official statement issued by Prime Minister’s Office, the university will be established at Salawa and Kaili villages of Sardhana town in Meerut at an approximate cost of around Rs 700 crore. The sports university will be equipped with modern and state-of-the-art sports infrastructure including synthetic hockey ground, football ground, basketball/volleyball/handball/kabaddi court, tennis court, gymnasium hall, synthetic running stadium, swimming pool, multipurpose hall and a cycling velodrome. There will also be facilities for shooting, squash, gymnastics, weightlifting, archery, canoeing and kayaking in the campus. A total of 1080 sportspersons (540 female and 540 male) can be trained at the university once it’s completed.
Emphasizing on why a sports university is much needed for the country, PM Modi said that the youth is the prime focus in India and hence their foundation and development need to be taken care of so that the entire world looks up to India. As per the National Education Policy 2020, sports which was treated as an extracurricular activity has been now kept in the same category as science, commerce and other streams and sports as a stream to be given equal priority. The sporting eco-system will comprise of sports, sports management, sports writing, sports psychology etc. “With resources, a sporting culture takes shape and Sports University will play a big role in this,” Modi said.
