At Regional College of Management (RCM), we take immense pride in hosting remarkable individuals who have dedicated their lives to social change. One such extraordinary personality is Meera Parida, a prominent social activist, leader, and President of the Transgender Community and LGBTQ+ community. Her journey is nothing short of inspiring, and we are honored to celebrate her achievements while emphasizing our own commitment to fostering an inclusive society.
The Inspiring Journey of Meera Parida
From Mayadhara Parida to Meera Parida, her transformation was filled with immense struggles and challenges. Born in a poor family in Odisha, she faced societal discrimination, exclusion, and hardship. However, her unwavering determination, resilience, and passion to bring change helped her emerge as a leading figure from Transgender Community in the LGBTQ+ movement in India.
Through years of advocacy, she has fought tirelessly for equal rights, social inclusion, and empowerment of transgender and marginalized communities. Meera is currently working on building an old age home for transgender individuals while engaging in numerous social initiatives aimed at helping the underprivileged.
Her efforts have been recognized at various levels, earning her prestigious awards such as “Best Transgender of the Year 2016” and over 200 accolades from organizations across India. As a UNDP-recognized Master Trainer on HIV, she continues to work on public health and rights awareness, making a lasting impact.
Early Life and Struggles
Meera’s early life was filled with adversity. As a transgender woman growing up in a conservative society, she faced rejection from her family and the larger community. Despite being subjected to discrimination and verbal abuse, she remained steadfast in her belief that she could make a difference in the world. With limited access to education and employment opportunities, she struggled to make ends meet. However, she never allowed these obstacles to define her future.
Determined to break the cycle of marginalization, Meera engaged in grassroots activism. She started working on HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns, participating in over 150 street plays to educate people about the challenges faced by transgender individuals. Through her relentless efforts, she soon became a voice for the LGBTQ+ community in Odisha and beyond.
Championing Human Rights and Advocacy
Meera Parida’s leadership extends beyond activism. Over the past decade, she has been a champion of human rights, advocating for the basic dignity and equality of the transgender and LGBTQ+ community. She has worked extensively with national and international organizations, including SAATHI Odisha, OSACS, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Her work includes counseling, community mobilization, and outreach to ensure better healthcare access and social integration for transgender individuals.
She has also played a crucial role in legal reforms, pushing for policies that recognize transgender rights in employment, education, and healthcare. She has been actively involved in policy discussions, lobbying for the implementation of The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which has provided transgender individuals with legal recognition and protection against discrimination.
