Experiential Learning in Finance: How RCM Students Learn Beyond the Textbook

Experiential learning in finance means applying financial concepts to realistic data, technology and industry situations rather than only reading theory. At RCM Bhubaneswar, students work on financial modelling, AI, FinTech and ESG through competitions, panel discussions and masterclasses, connecting classroom knowledge with practical application.

Why Experiential Learning Matters in Finance

Finance has often been taught as a largely theoretical subject. Reading books or browsing the internet may not be enough for students to apply that knowledge in real life. With AI and machine learning changing the business world, students need subject knowledge, active participation and practical exposure. RCM's approach brings students, faculty and industry leaders together to close that gap.

Additional Director, Regional College of Management
“Students cannot truly learn something until they experience it.” Dr. Padi outlines why RCM promotes experiential learning: helping students understand how national and international leaders respond to change, collaborate with students from other universities, and apply new methodologies such as data modelling. She also explains how RCM’s conclaves across HR, Finance, Marketing and other management domains feed updated knowledge into the curriculum.

“Students need not only subject knowledge but also active participation and practical exposure.” Professor Mahapatra describes how AI and machine learning have changed the business world, and walks through the two competitions, the panel discussions on AI and on ESG and Sustainable Business Practices, and the masterclasses planned over the two days.

Sagar Kumar Sethi

Finance Student, RCM

Speaking from the student perspective, Monasagar shares that the programme is being organised in collaboration with FinControl over two days, with a Financial Modelling competition and a Poster-Making competition. He hopes insights from industry leaders will help students become more industry-ready.

Themes to Programmes

From Financial Modelling to AI, FinTech and ESG

Students are encouraged to apply new methodologies such as data modelling, FinTech, AI, ESG and sustainable business practices. They also get the chance to present their own innovative ideas.
01

Financial Modelling

Realistic real-world data and Power BI to build futuristic models.
02

AI & FinTech

Technology-driven approaches explored through poster themes and an AI panel.
03

ESG & Sustainability

Sustainable business practices discussed alongside wealth management.

Learning Through Competitions and Industry Interaction

Two competitions anchor the experience. In the Financial Modelling Competition, students use realistic data and tools like Power BI to develop and present solutions. In the Innovative Poster-Making and Poster Presentation Competition, they explore FinTech, AI, ESG and sustainable business.

Two panel discussions (AI, and ESG and Sustainable Business Practices) and masterclasses by industry trainers add professional perspective. Executives from organisations such as EY and Deloitte are part of the interaction. To see how the event fits together, visit RCM's CAPXCHANGE finance conclave.

Connecting Classroom Learning with Industry

RCM regularly organises conclaves across HR, Finance, Marketing and other management domains so students can meet industry leaders and understand how the business world is changing. The aim is to integrate this updated knowledge with the existing curriculum so graduates can add value to the companies they join.

Students interested in building finance, analytics and industry-oriented skills can explore MBA+ Finance, Leadership & Strategy or PGDM+ Green Finance & ESG (FinTech).

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q01What is experiential learning in finance?
Experiential learning in finance means learning by doing. Instead of relying only on books or the internet, students apply concepts such as financial modelling and data modelling to realistic scenarios. RCM’s leaders describe this as essential because students cannot truly learn something until they experience it and apply it in practice.
Finance is often taught as largely theoretical, and reading alone may not prepare students to apply knowledge in real life. With AI, machine learning and a rapidly changing business environment, students need active participation and practical exposure. Experiential learning helps them build current knowledge and the ability to add value to employers.
In the Financial Modelling Competition, students receive realistic real-world data and use tools such as Power BI and other technologies to build futuristic financial models and present their solutions. This lets them practise data modelling, analytical thinking and presentation skills in a competitive, practical setting rather than a purely theoretical one.
Students explore these themes through an Innovative Poster-Making and Poster Presentation Competition covering FinTech, Artificial Intelligence, ESG and sustainable business. Panel discussions on AI and on ESG and Sustainable Business Practices add industry perspectives, helping students connect emerging trends with finance practice.

Students interact with executives from organisations such as EY and Deloitte, join panel discussions and attend masterclasses led by industry trainers. This helps them understand how leaders respond to changes in the financial environment, and RCM aims to integrate this updated knowledge with the curriculum so students can add value to employers.
